Setting Up a Hamster Cage

Have you recently decided to adopt a little furball? Hamsters are very cute pocket pets, and are very popular as starter pets for children. They are quite tame, easy to care for, and super cute to watch. One of the most important things you can do to ensure your furball’s happiness is to make sure you are setting Hammie’s cage up properly. Below, your local veterinarian Poughkeepsie explains how to correctly set up a hamster cage.

Cage

There are many different types of cages which are suitable for Hammie. You can use a store-bought cage, build your own, or repurpose a plastic storage bin. Whichever you choose, make sure that your little furball has at least 3 square feet of space. At least one side of the cage should be made of mesh or wire to ensure proper ventilation.

Substrate

Once you’ve selected a cage, the next step is choosing a substrate. It may take some trial and error to find the one you like best, as they all have their own pros and cons. Wood, help, paper, and sawdust are all suitable options. Avoid using pine or cedar, as these are toxic to small animals. Clumping kitty litter is also a no-no, as it can be extremely dangerous if ingested.

Furniture

Hammie will need a little hidey-hole. You can buy one or build one, or use a wood or cardboard box. Next, add some shredded toilet paper or tissue paper for nesting material. Your little furball will also need food and water dishes and a solid exercise wheel. Hamsters love tunnels, so we recommend adding at least one. Last but not least, Hammie needs plenty of toys to keep him happy and entertained.

Placement

It’s very important that you put Hammie’s cage in a good location. Don’t set up his cage in direct sunlight or in any drafty areas. You’ll also want to avoid putting him close to a TV or stereo. Another thing to keep in mind is that hamsters are nocturnal. Therefore, it may not be a good idea to put his cage in your bedroom.

We recommend setting the cage up before bringing your hamster home. Once you’ve got your new pet’s cage prepared, it’s time to go pick up Hammie and let the fun begin!
